African People & Wildlife - Wildlife Ranger Challenge 2023
Join African People & Wildlife in taking on the 2023 Wildlife Ranger Challenge! Let's celebrate the heroic efforts of our 11 co-ed rangers who help protect Tanzania's Tarangire National Park while supporting an estimated 110 local livelihoods.
My story
Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They hold diverse roles as conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more. The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organized by Tusk, is a celebration of solidarity, connection and camaraderie for the ranger profession.
African People & Wildlife supports a team of Community Game Scouts outside Tarangire National Park. The team operates in four zones extending outside village boundaries, where there's high potential for conflict as animals move across park boundaries.
The scouts serve a critical role in the community:
- Protecting wildlife and habitat from illegal activities
- Searching for lost livestock and people
- Responding to human-wildlife conflict events
- Helping stranded animals
- Liaising with the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) and Wildlife Division to respond to illegal activities
As a direct result of WRC support, the team was expanded from 4 to 11 members. With these new scouts, the team can cover more ground, address multiple incidents simultaneously, and ensure that scouts have enough rest time. The Community Game Scout team was also provided with a vehicle and equipped with phones to track their movements and collect data while on patrol.
In 2023, support from the WRC will continue to increase the effectiveness of the Community Game Scout team by providing financial, technical, and logistical resources to these dedicated rangers and conservationists.
Give today and the Scheinberg Relief Fund will match every dollar!

For the second time in three years, APW-supported Community Game Scouts emerged victorious in the competition, with another team close behind to secure a silver-place finish. All participants in this year's Challenge demonstrate the strength and dedication of rangers across the continent and raise awareness of the important role that rangers play in protecting the natural world. Thank you to the global community for the outpouring of support for rangers serving across the continent.

Redefining Rangering: APW Community Game Scouts Promote Human-Wildlife Coexistence
Apr 27, 2023, 11:55:02 AMThe APW-supported Community Game Scouts safeguard the wild beyond the borders of Tarangire National Park. Unlike other types of rangers, their mission is to serve communal rangelands outside of a protected area. The scouts also work closely with Tanzania National Parks Authority when their patrols or any illegal activities cross the park boundary, creating an effective force for conservation that promotes human-wildlife coexistence in local communities.
