My story

Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They hold diverse roles as conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more.

The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk, is a celebration of solidarity, connection and camaraderie for the ranger profession. Culminating on 16th September 2023, the campaign raises vital funds for Africa's biodiversity guardians.

Honeyguide Foundation - Makao Wildlife Management Area

Despite significant investment in community-based conservation over the past 20 years in Tanzania, WMAs are not working because there has not been an adequate focus on making them work from a multifaceted and holistic approach. Over the past five years, Honeyguide’s goal has been to prove that WMAs can be successful nature-based enterprises where people and wildlife are interdependent, natural habitats and wildlife are sustained, and local communities benefit.

The Makao WMA and surrounding areas are part of a transition zone that has seasonal movements of wildlife from the nearby protected areas of Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and Maswa Game Reserve. Notable among these are migrations of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle through the Serengeti ecosystem, which is considered one of the outstanding wildlife spectacles of the world.

The Makao team is participating in the Wildlife Ranger Challenge for the first time, and the funding will support village operations, including salaries, rations, and patrols.

Give today and the Scheinberg Relief Fund will match every dollar donated, amplifying your impact. Join us in speaking up #ForWildlifeRangers

Makao WMA is struggling to support their salaries due to the lack of funding making very little to support the operation. As a result, they are struggling to fuel patrols to protect endangered species in the area, posing a significant risk to wildlife conservation efforts.
