Project Rhino - Wildlife Ranger Challenge 2023
Project Rhino is taking on the Wildlife Ranger Challenge to raise awareness of the vital role our 700 rangers play in protecting South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal Ecosystem, and supporting an estimated 2800 livelihoods.
My story
Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They hold diverse roles as conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more.
The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk, is a celebration of solidarity, connection and camaraderie for the ranger profession. Culminating on 16th September 2023, the campaign raises vital funds for Africa's biodiversity guardians.
With the support of the WRC funding, our teams could continue work as normal in 2022. During the course of the year, our K9-Unit removed 885 snares on patrol, responded to 112 emergency call outs, apprehended 33 criminals, retrieved 3 illegal firearms, recovered stolen goods from 17 incidences, recovered 9 hi-jacked vehicles, responded to 10 armed robbery / burglary cases, dealt with 1 abduction case and retrieved narcotics from 3 separate incidences where arrests were made. Our Zululand Anti-Poaching Wing flew a total of 368 hours of which 325 were for patrol and reaction. 12 Poached rhinos were found, 2 wounded rhinos were detected and successfully treated and 5 calves from poached adult females were located and successfully moved to a rhino orphanage to ensure their survival. WRC also enabled us to conduct continuous training of ranger teams.

May 2, 2023, 9:29:00 AMFor the last 3 consecutive years in a row the WRC have supported our teams on the ground to such an extent that we never had to stop any of our projects but could continue with the work on the ground without interruptions. The timing of the funding support has been crucial as January and February months are extremely difficult fundraising months and the WRC have literally carried us through. We cannot express our gratitude in words. We are extremely proud and grateful to be part of this initiative and to be part of the greater collaborative supporting our rangers and the important work they do on the frontline for conservation.
