Lion Landscapes Team - Supporting and Training Lion Rangers across Laikipia

Lion Landscapes’ team is taking on the Wildlife Ranger Challenge to raise awareness of the vital role that Lion Rangers play in protecting the 2.6-million-acre Laikipia-Samburu landscape, which is home to Kenya’s third largest lion population.

My story

Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They hold diverse roles as conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more.

The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk, is a celebration of solidarity, connection and camaraderie for the ranger profession. Culminating on 16th September 2023, the campaign raises vital funds for Africa's biodiversity guardians.

Almost 80% (approx. 250) of the lions in the Laikipia-Samburu landscape reside on private ranches and conservancies due to plentiful wild prey and excellent livestock husbandry practices. These conservancies and ranches within this landscape are therefore critical “sources” of wildlife where lion, wild dog, and many other species breed, replenishing populations in the surrounding communities and reserves.

The Laikipia Lion Rangers are employed by the individual conservancies and ranches but are trained and supported by Lion Landscapes (in partnership with The Peregrine Fund) to monitor and protect lions and other large carnivores, prevent attacks on livestock and to work with communities to stop the use of poison in retaliatory killings.

Our team of staff provides the training and day-to-day practical support to the Laikipia Lion Rangers. This year our very own team will be participating in the Wildlife Ranger Challenge in solidarity with the rangers teams from across Africa that are taking part.

In 2022 we trained 156 rangers with the support of Tusk and proceeds from the Wildlife Ranger Challenge. Help us grow that number. Give today and the Scheinberg Relief Fund will match every dollar donated, amplifying your impact. Join us in speaking up #ForWildlifeRangers

Protect the Pride!

Aug 21, 2023, 9:14:37 AM

Lions are under serious threat. Many wild lions in East Africa and beyond live on unprotected land, shared with people and livestock. Lions need a healthy environment, natural prey, and tolerance from humans and livestock to thrive. We are working to create a Lion Landscape for coexistence. Help us support the Laikipia Lion Rangers and protect wildlife and livelihoods.Together we can create Lion Landscapes and safeguard them for future generations. #ForWildlifeRangers #lionrangers #humanwildlifecoexistence #lionconservation #conservation #protectthepride #wildliferangerchallenge

Test your knowledge!

Woohoo! We are super excited to have scored 410,137 points, having answered 25 out of the 30 questions correctly in the Wildlife Ranger Quiz. Take the quiz to test your knowledge about wildlife and conservation and see if you’ve got what it takes to train like a ranger. It's a difficult one, and we challenge you to get at least 75% correct. https://wildliferangerchallenge.org/wildlife-ranger-quiz/ Don't stop there, please donate so that we can train more Lion Rangers on the 14 conservancies and ranches we are partnering with in 2023. #ForWildlifeRangers #LionRangers #TrainLikeARanger

We're in!

May 24, 2023, 12:33:27 PM

We are excited to be taking part in the annual Wildlife Ranger Challenge in 2023, organised by Tusk. Our teams taking part are: Lion Landscapes, Borana Conservancy, Loisaba Conservancy, Mpala Research Centre, Mugie, Ol Jogi Wildlife Conservancy, Ol Maisor, Suyian Soul and Karisia Walking Safaris. The role of a ranger is so much more than you might think. They play crucial roles in their communities, help solve human-wildlife conflict and protect ecosystems vital to the fight against climate change. But to protect species and ecosystems into the future, they must be well facilitated and equipped. Show your support for our rangers by donating to the fundraising campaign. All funds will be matched by the Scheinberg Relief Fund doubling the impact of your donation. #WildlifeRangerChallenge #ForWildlifeRangers
